Course objectives (competences):
The aim of this subject is for the student to become familiar with and adhere to the basic safety rules in a chemical laboratory. The material covers safety measures, behavior in the chemical laboratory, proper handling of various types of chemicals, and their appropriate treatment after the experiment is completed. Upon completion of the course, the student will be trained to responsibly approach work in a chemical laboratory and will know how to act preventively to protect themselves and others from risky situations.

Course content:
General rules of conduct in the chemical laboratory. Laboratory etiquette.
Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, laboratory coat, appropriate clothes and shoes, use of gloves, use of a fume hood). Laboratory protocol (visitors, maintenance and cleaning of the laboratory, washing of glassware, harmful chemicals inhalation, distillations, extractions, treatment of generated chemical waste - general rules, leaving chemical reactions and equipment unattended). Laboratory hazard guide - classification of hazardous chemicals working with flammable substances, working with corrosive substances, working with hazardous substances, working with potentially explosive substances. Properties of chemicals – labeling, safety data sheets (SDS) reading, interpretation, and learning from them. Specific examples of hazardous and toxic substances (strong bases and acids, mercury, cyanides, organic peroxides, and compounds that form peroxides). Chemical (in)compatibility. Proper handling of selected laboratory equipment and chemicals. Safety equipment and procedures in emergencies (Emergency procedures). Fires (fire prevention, appropriate response and extinguishing of fires). Reporting and treatment of chemical spills.
