Course objectives (competences): 

Delving deeper into the roots of chemistry to establish the path by which modern chemistry has reached such a high level. The student will gain an understanding of the origins and development of chemistry, and will become acquainted with the scientific and life paths of some of the prominent scientists.

Course content:
The origin of the name chemistry. The beginnings of chemistry. Philosophical reflections on the nature of matter. Knowledge of some types of materials (ceramics, glass, metals, paints, alcohol, vinegar) and distillation apparatus. The alchemical period. Jatrochemistry. Pneumatic chemistry. Phlogiston theory. Lavoisier's antiphlogistic theory. The beginnings of analytical chemistry. Development of atomic-molecular theories. Medieval thoughts on the structure of matter. The theories of Lemeri, Wuth, Boschovich, Higgins, Lomonosov, Dalton, Berzelius, Gay-Lussac, Avogadro, Cannizzaro. Discovery of new elements. Systematization of the elements (Deberayner, Wollens, Mendeleev). Achievements of chemistry in the 19th century. Development of inorganic, analytical, organic, physical chemistry, and electrochemistry. Arrhenius' theory of electrolytic dissociation. Discovery of cathode rays, electron, proton, and neutron. Views on the structure of the atom. Discovery of radioactivity. Development of biochemistry. Chemistry in the 20th century. Discovery of polymers, zeolites, DNA, superconductors, and fullerenes. Nobel Prize.
