Course objectives (competences):
To provide a thorough introduction in the field of chemistry of crystals, as well as solid state chemistry and diffraction methods used for crystal structure determination.

11.

Course content:

  1. Geometric crystallography, introduction, crystal systems, morphology of crystals, Miller indices, fractional coordinates, symmetry (rotational, translational and reflection), point groups, space groups.
  2. Crystals and solid-state chemistry, factor affecting the structure, close packing theories, isomorphism and polymorphism, quasicrystals, ideal and real crystals.
  3. Diffraction techniques, X-rays, real and reciprocal lattice, scattering by an atom, group of atoms, Bragg’s law, Ewald sphere method, Laue method, Weissenberg method, goniometers and detectors. Methods for crystal structure determination, X-ray powder diffraction.
