Course objectives (competences):
Introducing of students to the subject of physics, the methods applied and the fundamental ideas. Establishing and deepening knowledge in the areas of mechanics and molecular physics.

Course content:
Introduction. Scalars and vectors. Classical mechanics. Kinematics. Kinematics of a particle. Particle motion along a curve in a plane. Dynamics. Newton’s laws. Work and energy. Conservative forces. Law of conservation of energy and momentum. Mechanical oscillations and mechanical waves. Fluid mechanics. Molecular phenomena. Empirical gas laws. Equation of state of an ideal gas. Thermodynamics. First and second laws of thermodynamics. Heat capacities of gases. Adiabatic processes. Electrostatics. Direct electric current. Ohm’s law. Kirchhoff’s rules. Electric current in liquids. Electrolytes. Magnetism. Magnetic field. Ampère’s law. Lorentz force. Magnetic properties of matter. Geometrical optics. Fundamental laws. Fermat’s principle. Optical lenses and optical prisms. Physical optics. Interference and diffraction. Fundamentals of atomic physics. Photoelectric effect. X-rays. Atomic models. Wave-particle duality. Natural radioactivity. Law of radioactive decay. Structure of the atomic nucleus. Nuclear forces. Mass defect.
