Course objectives (competences):
To study and give the main principles of atomic and molecular structure, modern theories of chemical bonding, molecular symmetry as well as some electrical and magnetic properties of molecules.

Course content:

  1. Introduction to atomic structure theory, charge, mass, velocity and radius od electrons, very first theories concerning atomic structure, radius and charge of atomic nucleus.
  2. Quantum theory, wave and corpuscular nature of the light, quantum of energy, blackbody radiation, photoelectric effect, Compton effect, atomic spectrum of hydrogen, Borh model.
  3. Electromagnetic waves, dual nature of the light, Heisenberg principle, Schrodinger’s equation, wave function, particle in a box model.
  4. Electron density for hydrogen atom and more complex atoms, orbitals and quantum numbers, radial and angular term of the wave function, vector model, Zeeman effect, periodic table.
  5. Chemical bonding, types, hybridization, coordination. Bond type and length, energy of a bond. Hydrogen bonding.
  6. Molecular symmetry, elements and operations of symmetry, point groups and some basic principles of group theory.
  7. Solid state chemistry, crystallographic terms and X-ray diffraction.
  8. Electrical properties of molecules, dipole moment, polarization and polarizability.
  9. Magnetic properties of molecules, magnetic moment, diamagnetism and paramagnetism, nuclear paramagnetism.
  10. Basics of molecular spectroscopy, rorational spectra, vibrational spectra, vibronic spectra, electron spectra. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and electron-paramagnetic spectroscopy.
  11. Liquid state chemistry. Theories about liquids, intermolecular interactions and viscosity. Liquid crystals.
  12. Electrolytes, conductivity, electrolyte dissociation theory, solvation process, ionic equilibrium, electrochemical cells, types of electrochemical cells and electrode potentials.
