Course objectives (competences):
The student should acquire knowledge in the field of nanochemistry and nanotechnology, focusing on concepts related to the size of systems and scale, the unconventional properties of nanoscale, as well as the practical aspects of the studied phenomena.

11.

Course content:
1. Introduction to the concepts of nanochemistry: nanoscience, nanoterminology, visionaries of nanothinking, nanochemistry, nanomaterials, nanoscale, surface of nanoparticles, nanotechnology, classification of nanostructures, nanoarchitecture.
2. Unique (singular) properties of nanoscale: properties of substances, what is different at the nano-scale, why and how properties change at the nanoscale, quantum effects.
3. Electronic properties of atoms and solid phases: isolated atom, bonding between atoms, from isolated atom to solid phase, free electron model, energy bands, crystalline solid phases, periodicity of crystal lattice, electronic conductivity, effects of nanoscale: changes in the total energy of the system, changes in crystal structure, influence of nano-dimensions on properties (structural, thermal, chemical, mechanical, magnetic, optical, electrical, biological systems).
4. Techniques for characterization of nanostructures: chronology of nanochracterization, classification of characterization techniques according to different criteria, "viewing" at the nano-scale, microscopic techniques: electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, STEM, EDX, AES), scanning probe microscopy (STM, AFM)), diffraction techniques for characterization of: bulk samples (XRD, ND) and surfaces (SAXS, WAXS, RHEED, LEED), spectroscopic techniques (photon spectroscopy, radiofrequency spectroscopy, electron spectroscopy), surface analysis techniques (XPS), techniques for characterization of properties (mechanical, electrical, magnetic, thermal).
5. Production of nanostructures: top-down approach, bottom-up approach (methods of deposition from vapor phase - PVD and CVD, deposition methods in the presence of plasma - magnetron sputtering, techniques based on epitaxy - LPE, VPE, MBE, chemical synthesis in liquid phase, colloidal methods, sol-gel methods, electrodeposition, chemical synthesis in solid phase), methods for synthesis with the aid of scaffold structures, arrangement of nano systems (self-assembly and self-organization, self-arrangement in nature).
6. Self-assembled nanostructures: control of nanoarchitecture, principles of self-assembly, one-dimensional control (carbon nanotubes and inorganic nanowires), two-dimensional control (quantum wells and solid superlattices), three-dimensional control.
7. Bionanotechnology: new tools for studying biological systems, biomimetic nanotechnology (DNA as a building block in bionanotechnology, molecular motors, artificial photosynthesis, bionanocomposites).
8. Application of nanochemistry and challenges
