Course objectives (competences):
Students should acquire basic and advanced knowledge of molecular genetics, the molecular basis of inheritance, mutations and their repair, the structure and organization of genes and genomes, as well as the prokaryotic and eukaryotic regulation of gene expression. In addition, it is necessary to become familiar with the basics of recombinant DNA technology, that is, genetic engineering.

11.

Course content:
Regulation of gene expression. Regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes - promoters and the concept of operons. Control of transcription at the operator-repressor level: the lac operon. DNA-binding regulatory proteins; coordinating gene expression; other transcriptional regulation mechanisms. Posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression in eukaryotes; translational and posttranslational regulation. Basics of classical (transmission) genetics. Mendel's first and second laws of inheritance. Molecular aspects of dominance and recessiveness. Deviations from Mendelian laws and other forms of inheritance. Sex-linked inheritance. DNA recombination and gene mapping. Molecular aspects of gene mutations. Biological repair of DNA mutations. Evolutionary significance of mutations. Genomics; prokaryotic genomes; the eukaryotic genome and its expression; repetitive sequences in the eukaryotic genome; structure of protein-coding genes; eukaryotic gene families; human genome. Genetics of bacteria and their viruses. Transcriptomics, Interactomics and Regulatomics. Basic concepts of recombinant DNA technology.

Criteria for taking the final exam

The criteria is regular attendance at practical classes (absences of a maximum of 2 exercises). To pass the exam/earn the credits, it is necessary to score a minimum of 56 points. The exam cannot be passed if the minimum points are not obtained from both the practical part and the minimum points from each of the colloquiums for the theoretical part, individually. Points from regularity and activity in lectures are not mandatory, but they take part in the calculation.
