Course objectives (competences): 

To study the methods for analyzing petroleum derivatives and fuels.

Course content:
Introduction; Crude oil: Refining process - Pretreatment, Fractional (rectification) distillation of crude oil, Fractional distillation under reduced pressure (vacuum distillation), Cracking of heavy oil fractions, Catalytic hydrocracking. Fuels: Combustion and burning, Principles of combustion, Classification of fuels, Calorific value, Characteristics of good fuels. Gaseous fuels: Classification of gaseous fuels, Characteristics of gaseous fuels, Natural gaseous fuels, Gaseous fuels obtained from other materials. Liquid fuels: Gasoline fuels, Diesel fuels, Biodiesel, Mazut. Lubricating oils: Viscosity, Classification of lubricants according to purpose, according to characteristics and NLGI classification, Mineral base oils and chemically modified lubricants, Synthetic base oils, Quality of base oils and additive addition. Bitumen and asphalt: Obtaining refined bitumen, Types (categories) of asphalt/bitumen; Solid fuels: Coal (Components of coal, Derivatives obtained from coal, Sampling coal for analysis, Analysis of coal, Classification of coal, Sulfur in coal), Coke (Obtaining coke, Application of coke, Characteristics of coke), Petroleum coke (Types, characteristics, and uses of petroleum coke, Processes for obtaining petroleum coke), Activated carbon and adsorption (Adsorption process, Adsorbents, Regeneration and reactivation of adsorbents). Particle size analysis.
Exercises: Determination of density of petroleum derivatives; Determination of water in petroleum derivatives; Determination of corrosiveness of petroleum derivatives; Determination of calorific value with calorimetric bomb; Determination of the composition of gaseous fuels. Analysis of the quality of gasoline, diesel fuels. Lubricant analysis. Bitumen analysis.
