Course objectives (competences):
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with common cyclic compounds that contain one or two heteroatoms in their structure. Students will learn to recognize basic structures, to name them, and to link them with the chemical and physical characteristics of the compounds in whose structure they are incorporated.

11.

Course content:
Introduction to heterocyclic compounds. Reactions for ring formation. Nomenclature of heterocyclic compounds. Three-membered heterocyclic compounds with one heteroatom (aziridines, epoxides, episulfides). Four-membered heterocyclic compounds with one heteroatom (azetidines, oxetanes, thiethanes). Five-membered heterocyclic compounds with one heteroatom (pyrrole and derivatives, furan and derivatives, thiophene and derivatives). Six-membered heterocyclic compounds with one heteroatom (pyridine and derivatives, fused pyridines, pyrylium cation, pyranones, chromenones). Six-membered heterocyclic compounds with two heteroatoms (pyridazines, pyrimidines, pyrazines, quinoline, oxazines, thiazines, piperazines, dioxanes, morpholine).
