Course objectives (competences):
Consolidation and deepening of knowledge in the areas of electromagnetism, optics and modern physics. Providing the necessary understanding of these areas of physics to successfully pursue certain courses in chemistry studies.

Course content:
1. Electrostatics: 1.1 Introduction; 1.2 Coulomb’s law; 1.3 Electrostatic field strength and potential; 1.4 Interactions of dipoles (electric field and potential of an electric dipole, electric dipole in an electric field, dipole-dipole interactions, dipole-induced dipole interactions, induced dipoles interactions); 1.5 Conductor and insulator in an electrostatic field; 1.6 Electrical capacity; 1.7 Permanent direct current; 1.8 Ohm’s law; 1.9 Kirchhoff’s laws; 1.10 Electrical current through electrolytes; 2. Electromagnetism: 2.1 Introduction; 2.2 Magnetic force between current elements (magnetic field of a current element; magnetic flux); 2.3 Examples (magnetic field of a long straight conductor, magnetic field of circular conductor); 2.4 Magnetic moment of circular current and magnetic dipole; 2.5 Forces on isolated charges in a magnetic field (motion of charged particles in an electric and magnetic field, Hall’s effect); 2.6 Faraday’s law of induction and examples; 2.7 Magnetic properties of matter (paramagnetism, diamagnetism, ferromagnetism); 2.8 Application of magnetic fields in spectroscopy (nuclear magnetic resonance, Zeeman effect). 3. Optics: 3.1 Geometrical optics; 3.2 Wave equation and its solution; 3.3 Energy and momentum of an electromagnetic wave; 3.4 Laws of reflection and transmission of electromagnetic waves; 3.5 Fermat’s principle; 3.6 Interference of light waves (Young’s experiment, Michelson’s interferometer, interference from thin films); 3.7 Diffraction of light waves; 3.8 Polarization of light waves; 4. Quantum mechanics: 4.1 Introduction; 4.2 Some earlier mysteries (nature of light, nature of matter, ultraviolet catastrophe); 4.3 Quantum hypotheses (Planck’s law, Bohr’s postulates for hydrogen atom, molar heat capacities, photoelectric effect, Compton’s effect, De Broglie’s wavelength); 4.4 Schrodinger equation and particle in a box.
