Course objectives (competences):
Through interactive teaching, laboratory and numerical exercises, students should acquire knowledge of the fundamentals of chemistry, including the structure of substances, the structure of the constituent particles, the basic principles governing the chemical transformations of substances, and the nomenclature of the main groups of inorganic compounds. In addition, students should master the basics of chemical calculations and gain practical knowledge in general chemistry.

Course content:
The basic concepts of chemical science, substances and their classification, as well as the fundamental properties of gaseous, liquid, and solid substances will be defined and studied. The basic structure of the atom will be examined, which will be followed by the introduction of chemical symbols and chemical formulas. Subsequently, the main groups of inorganic compounds and their nomenclature will be studied. Special attention will be devoted to the electronic structure of the atom, its connection with the Periodic Table of the Elements, and the atomic properties that change periodically. The fundamental laws governing chemical reactions will be studied, including their energetic effects, their rate, and the state of chemical equilibrium. In addition, solutions will be studied, as well as equilibrium processes in electrolyte solutions and the basic properties of oxidation–reduction processes.
