Course objectives (competences):
Through teaching and exercises, students should master the basics of biochemistry, acquire theoretical knowledge and practical experience, as a prerequisite for successfully following the teaching of higher courses in biochemistry and other biochemical disciplines. In this way, students will begin to professionally train as biochemists.

11.

Course content:
-Introduction to biochemistry: pH, biochemical buffers.
-Carbohydrates: Definition. Physical traits and division. Monosaccharides. Carbohydrate derivatives. Oligosaccharides. Polysaccharides. More important representatives of carbohydrates.
-Lipids and membranes: Higher fatty acids. Acylglycerols. Glycerolphospholipids. Sphingolipids. Steroids and carotenoids. Cholesterol. Bile acids. Steroid glycosides. Biological membranes. Transport across membranes.
-Amino acids, peptides and proteins: Important amino acids. Chemical properties of amino acids. Peptides. Proteins. Definition, physical and chemical properties of proteins. Biological function of proteins. Important representatives of different classes of proteins: fibrillar, globular, nucleoproteins, chromoproteins, glycoproteins, phosphoproteins, lipoproteins.
-Vitamins and coenzymes: Role of vitamins and coenzymes. Division of vitamins. Water soluble vitamins. Oil soluble vitamins.
-Enzymes and enzyme action: Chemical nature of enzymes. Specificity of enzyme action. Types of enzyme catalysis. Chemical kinetics of enzymatic reactions. Michaelis-Menten kinetics.
-Nucleic acids: Chemical properties of nucleic acids. Deoxyribonucleic acid - DNA. Chemical synthesis of DNA. DNA hybridization. Ribonucleic acids – RNA. Types and properties of RNA.
